A rare marked earthenware spittoon from an obscure and short-lived Ontario potter -- Caleb Saunders, Albion Pottery, Bolton. The glaze is exceptional and in stark contrast to the few other known marked pieces by Saunders which are very plain. Not much is known about Saunders or the wares he produced but he was born in England in June 1865, came to Canada in 1882 at the age of 17, and worked at the potteries in Newton Brook and Lynden before purchasing the pottery in Bolton in 1898. He operated the pottery until his early death in 1904 at the age of 39. Stamped, "Albion Pottery / C. Saunders / Bolton. Ont.", underneath.
