Description
Ottawa, Ontario. C. 1895. Decorated with a cobalt sprig or leaning tree. The cobalt sprig decoration on the Kennedy jug is very unusual and can be reliably attributed to the briefly-operated (1884 to 1885) Fairbairn & Co. pottery in Brockville (Francis "Frank" Erskine Fairbairn). Marked "Kennedy & Co., Dealers in Choice Groceries and Liquors 261 Wellington St., Cor Kent St., OTTAWA".
Condition
Jug is in very good condition with the heavily salt-glazed surface resulting in a somewhat darker tone and pebbled texture. Scattered patches of stains from contents (slight odour from inside) and there is a 1/2" potstone on the right side just below the spout. Scattered minor thin flakes. A small/tight in-manufacture crack underneath that extends 1" along the base edge at the front.
Medium
Stoneware.
Provenance
From the Jon Church Collection.
