Description
An early Hart/Picton stoneware four-gallon jug made for merchants Chapman & Striker in Picton, Canada West.. In the late 1840s Dr. Reuben Jerald Chapman and his brother-in-law, Gideon Striker (a druggist by trade), established their mercantile in Picton that they ran together until 1866 when Dr. Chapman retired and then was elected as the County Treasurer, a position he held until his death in 1885. Striker continued with the business on his own until the late 1860s, then became heavily involved in local and provincial politics. He was elected as the MPP for Prince Edward County from 1872 until 1883, and passed away suddenly in 1886. This jug dates to the 1850s. Stamped, "Chapman & Striker / Druggists Grocers & / Stationers / Picton C,W. / 4".
Condition
Light to moderate surface staining throughout. A few minor in-manufacture chips, potstones, kiln furniture touches and very fine/tight hairline cracks.
