Description
Eagle Head, Nova Scotia. 1981. Certainly one of the most interesting of all Canadian folk artists, Charlie Tanner (1904 - 1982) showed skill and imagination in all of his colourful works. Executed the year before his death, this piece, Man with Spotted Dog, is consistent with the style and execution of his bulbous figures. The human form, as he carves it, borders on the abstract. Elongated arms and shoulders, bulbous torso and oddly shaped head with extended brow are common to just about all his human figures. The spotted dog, in this case, sits on his haunches, alert and ready for a command. Tanner confidently painted his works with bold, smooth colours. There are many single figure Tanners, but few multiple-figure Tanners. Signed, "Charlie Tanner" and dated underneath.
