Description
Avonport, Nova Scotia. Early 1990s. In the world of Canadian folk art, the vast majority of wood carvers are male. Phyllis Cosman (1927 - 2020) is a wonderful exception to that rule. In terms of subject matter, skill and feel for wood carving, few others are in her class: male or female. Take this carving "Sisters" for example. The grace and charm of this grouping, with one of them holding a baby in her arm is exceptional. Simple yet compelling, Mrs. Cosman finished her carvings with bold, cheerful colours. Her career as a carver was not a long one hence her body of work is small. Signed, "P. Cosman. / 05" on the base.
