Description
Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. C. 1970. Painted wood carving of a swan by Collins Eisenhauer (1898-1979). In this example of his work, Mr. Eisenhauer adds a touch of humour by having the swan stretch his neck to one side and gaze sharply in that direction. Only a gifted carver could accomplish such a nuance. The nicely carved wings have an articulated feel to them, the sign of a highly skilled carver. A desirable work by a uniquely gifted folk artist. Unmarked.
Condition
Midsection age crack running from front to back of body. Paint loss to neck and some scuffs to the body. Minor tip breaks to the tail and wing feathers with repair to one wing feather at tip. Applied feet have never been painted.
Medium
Painted wood caring.
Provenance
From the collection of the late Peter Josten, of New York, New York and Princeton, New Jersey.
