Description
German. 1910s. Lehmann was best known for their painted clockwork toys and tin windups. They ended their production of windups in the mid-1920s. Lehmann toys remain among the most highly sought-after toys by collectors. The "773" represents a Lehmann inventory number. This toy also has a Masuyama name. The reason for the 2 names is that the toy would have been made by one company (Lehmann) and sold to a second company (Masuyama) for distribution. This could have been done for many reasons: one company may not have a license to produce an item or they may not have the manufacturing capabilities. This is a rare toy featuring an oriental lady in a rickshaw being pulled by a labourer. Her social status is evident. One of the finest Lehmann toys made. Marked, "Lehmann", on back of rickshaw along with Lehmann trademarked logo. Marked, "Made in Germany" on back of rickshaw. Marked, "Masuyama", on back of rickshaw. Marked, "D.R.P.", on underside axle- note: this is not a maker's mark but rather indicates the item is patented.
