ARTIST
Everett Lewis (1893-1979) was the husband of renowned folk artist Maud Lewis. Starting as a farm laborer and fish peddler, Everett married Maud Dowley in 1938. As Maud battled rheumatoid arthritis, rendering her unable to manage household chores, Everett took on these responsibilities and bought her first set of oil paints, fostering her artistic career. After Maud's passing, he pursued his own artistic path, creating maritime scenes, landscapes, and subjects distinct from Maud's, yet bearing his artistic touch. Everett's life met a tragic end during a burglary at their home in 1979.

Marshalltown, Nova Scotia. C. 1975. After Maud Lewis died, her husband Everett took up painting to have something to offer people who continued to come to the cabin in search of her artwork. Here he has painted his version of the Maritime staple of two yoked oxen with, it has been suggested, Maud Lewis as driver standing to the right. Signed "Everett Lewis" at lower center.
