Description
Marshalltown, Nova Scotia. Middle to late 1950s. A Maud Lewis painting depicting a fluffy white dog with black markings under flowering cherry trees. The background is green with flowers in vibrant colours. Maud and Everett had many dogs and this dog closely resembles "Bill". Everett owned "Bill" prior to meeting Maud and claimed that while "Bill" challenged everyone, he never challenged Maud from the first time they met. Everett admitted that this was a deciding factor in his marriage to Maud. This is a rare serial image and an early example of Maud's use of "at-hand" materials to practice her craft. Signed, "Lewis", lower right.
