Description
Canadian. New Hamburg, Ontario. Ca: 1915. Oil on tin panel. Inspector Nick by Oro Wilkes' oil on tin panel of a race horse by Jacob G. Beilstein (1867-1944). Oro Wilkes was foaled at the farm of William Corbitt near San Mateo California in 1890 and was developed by John Goldsmith who rode him to victory in the first (1893) Kentucky Futurity. The famed Oro Wilkes came to Canada via Katherine Langdon Wilks (sic) (1854-1948), a member of the Astor Family of New York who ran a 1,000 acre stock farm near Galt Ontario (an astonishing role for a woman of the time). Oro Wilkes was illustrated at the Guelph Agricultural College in the December 13, 1906 Farmer's Advocate published in London Ontario. A New York Times article in 1918 noted that Oro Wilkes was destroyed at Katherine Wilks' Cruickston Park Farm near Galt, Ontario, Canada on September 8, 1918 " as his days of usefulness were over". 'Inspector Nick', the subject of this work, was a prodigy of Oro Wilkes and was likely foaled at Katherine Wilks' Cruickston Park Farm (note the artist's spelling of "Wilks" (without an "e"). It is interesting to note that Katherine Wilks' brother, Eugene Langdon Wilks, designed and built Langdon Hall located in Cambridge (formerly Galt), Ontario. Although little is known about the artist, Waterloo County archives list Jacob G. Beilstein as a "painter" from New Hamburg, Ontario who was buried in New Hamburg, Ontario. Signed recto lower left, "J. BEILSTEIN" and "P.T.R" and lower center, "INSPECTOR NICK / WEIGHT 1050 / BY ORO WILKS". Signed verso, The "PTR" next to his name and the JB logo on the back of the painting support this with "PTR" possibly meaning "painter". Waterloo County archives list Jacob G. Beilstein ( b March 4,1867 d 1944) as a "painter" from New Hamburg,Ontario who is buried in New Hamburg.
