Description
Canadian. Pre- 1890. Oil on canvas. Homer Ransford Watson (1855-1936). Homer Watson had a career that was sparked by the purchase of paintings by the Marquis of Lorne for Queen Victoria in the first years of the 1880s. Oscar Wilde deemed him “the Canadian Constable” and this example reflects that same quality and impetus from those early 19th century years of his career. Watson was influenced by painters of the Hudson River School and this is also reflected in this piece. Watson's subject of a cattleman on horseback is rare. On the extreme left, an opening into the woods is marked by a farm gate. Many works of this type are found only in institutions and they come to the marketplace much less often. This painting was once exhibited at the Homer Watson Gallery. It carries an interest local to Watson who used his imagination in combination with his home situation overlooking the Grand River in Waterloo County. Signed recto lower right, partially obscured by the frame.
Condition
Excellent. There is expected crazing as with many Watson examples due to the thickness of paint on canvas. It is 100% stable and might have had some restorative stabilization as evidenced by a very tight canvas.
Medium
Oil on canvas.
Provenance
Purchased from Ritchies' Canadian Art sale, December 4, 1989. From the Keith Dill Collection.
