Description
Canadian. Toronto, Ontario. c1870. Salt-Glazed Stoneware. Toronto wine merchant Henry Quetton St. George claimed that of all of his customers, "medical men" were the greatest proponents of the "elixir" that he sold. Sir John A. MacDonald is said to have placed an order of 324 bottles with Quetton before Christmas of 1881 "in the event that anyone should drop in unexpectedly". Stamped, "QUETTON ST GEORGE & CO / WINE MERCHANTS / 30 34 36 & 38 / KING ST. EAST / TORONTO ONT".
Condition
Tight hairline cracks can be seen with one next to the handle and one to the right of the "3" numeral that spiders out and continues downwards. A few slight imperfections that would have occurred during the firing process are evident and some minor losses in the glaze are noticeable on the left side of the jug below the midpoint.
