Our October 14th sale presents an exciting curation of Folk Art dating from the 1950s forward. It affords collectors an opportunity to acquire rare and interesting works of art sourced from distinguished Canadian collections.
During their travels across Canada, Lawrence and Linda Laing became captivated by the colours, presentation, and simplicity of folk art. They procured a significant portion of their collection directly from the artists, fostering a deep appreciation for their work. The late Jim Fleming was a former Canadian Broadcaster and Member of the House of Commons whose search for Canada’s best folk art began in the 1970s. Much of what he offers in this sale is fully documented. Beloved Toronto Optometrist Marty Osler could easily be considered Canadiana’s poster child. Osler’s contributions to this sale come from deep within his mineshaft of trappings. Since Susan Murray’s 2007 Canadian/US tour of The Beaverbrook Art Gallery, her collection and name were immortalized. Other contributors include Manny Gomes and Ronnie Aronson.
A significant portion of this sale is dedicated to Maritime Folk Art, featuring works by acclaimed artists such as Collins Eisenhauer, Charlie Tanner, Bradford Naugler, Joseph Sleep, Joe Norris, and the iconic Maud Lewis. Offered as lot 201 is ‘Man with Lobster Traps’ by Maud Lewis, a rare image that was originally sold through Ontario artist John Kinnear. Kinnear was one of Lewis’ earlier supporters.
Also included in this auction are creations by notable Ontario folk artists such as Ewald Rentz, Barbara Clark-Fleming, Phillip Melvin, Jacob Roth, among others.
An impressive selection of pieces by distinguished Quebec artists is also offered, featuring names such as Edmond Chatigny, Wilfrid Richard, Lucien Legare, and Léonard Croteau.
This sale also features pieces from outsider artists such as Mose Tolliver, Purvis Young, Lee Godie, Howard Finster, Jimmy Lee Sudduth, among others.
This auction is an ode to post-1950 folk art, where vibrant colours, charming presentations, and the allure of simplicity converge. For serious collectors of Canadian heritage and folk art, this is not a sale to be missed.
