Description
Canadian. 1940s. Mould formed composite with painted details. Dawes was one of the major and most famous breweries in Quebec. It was founded in 1811 by Thomas Dawes. Black Horse Ale was the company's best seller and its flagship product from the 1800s through to 1952. The product was instantly recognizable by its logo of a "Percheron Noir" horse, a breed that originated in the Perche province of France. The breed is quite spectacular with defined muscles and known for their intelligence and willingness to work. Known as the Dawes Black Horse Brewery, when the company was looking for a new logo, the choice was obvious. They commissioned Ross Butler, the world's leading livestock artist, to create a statue of a black Percheron horse, such as the one exhibited in this sign. The horse has withstood the test of time and remains one of the most recognizable logos in advertising. This sign, in its original "DB" carved frame (at lower center), shows high relief graphics, vibrant colors and would complement any breweriana, Black Horse, advertising or equine collection. Embossed "Manufactured by John Walter & Sons Ltd, Kitchener, Ont" at upper center on reverse. Authenticated by The Authentication Company (TAC #400658). All items are guaranteed authentic by Miller & Miller Auctions. All purchases are eligible for delivery to the Spring Dixie Gas & Oil Show on April 10-12 2025.
