Description
Canadian. 1940s. Cast aluminum. Dawes was one of the major and most famous breweries in Quebec founded in 1811 by Thomas Dawes. Black Horse Ale was the company's best seller and its flagship product from the 1800s through to 1952. The product was instantly recognizable by its logo of a "Percheron Noir" (noir is French for black) horse, a breed that originated in the Perche province of France. The breed, as evidenced in this sculpture, is quite spectacular with well-defined muscles and regal stature. The breed was known for their intelligence and willingness to work. When the Dawes Black Horse Brewery was looking for a new logo, the choice was obvious. They commissioned Ross Butler, the Canada's famed agricultural and livestock artist and sculptor, to create a statue of a black Percheron horse, such as the one exhibited here. The statue offered here is a scaled-down cast aluminum version of Butler's original plaster statue. The Dawes black horse has withstood the test of time and remains to be one of the most recognizable logos in advertising. A magnificent sculpture that would nicely complement any breweriana, Black Horse, advertising or equine collection. Marked with sculptor's signature "Ross Butler" on base. Marked "Dunbar Aluminum Foundry Ltd Kitchener-Ontario" on underside. All items are guaranteed authentic by Miller & Miller Auctions. All purchases are eligible for delivery to the Spring Dixie Gas & Oil Show on April 10-12 2025.
Condition
Good condition with mostly original paint. The top of the base retains the original pale cream colour, but the area of the base that contains the script beneath has been repainted (with the exception of the area between the letters in “black, horse and ale”). Minor paint loss/wear to the tips of the ears.
Medium
Cast aluminum.
