Description
Canadian. 1940s. Single-sided lithographed paper. Offered here is another visually appealing large version of a Black Cat cardboard advertising sign. Black Cat was one of those companies that excelled at advertising. How could they not, having one of the most attractive logos and recognizable brands in the history of advertising. This advertising sign shows a beautiful woman wearing a pleated dress with puffy sleeves, accessory wide belt with matching scarf along with a chic, polished pincurl hairstyle, all of which represented a look typical of a 1940s fashion style that was popular both during and post-war. The Black Cat brand itself was first introduced in the United Kingdom by Carreras Ltd. in 1904. The brand was named for a black cat that used to sleep in the window of the Carreras' street shop. Since the name "Carreras" seemed too difficult to pronounce, everyone referred to the store as the "black cat shop". Marked "No 6618" at lower left edge. All items are guaranteed authentic by Miller & Miller Auctions. All purchases are eligible for delivery to the Spring Dixie Gas & Oil Show on April 10-12 2025.
Condition
Very good overall condition. Colors are vibrant and display well. Pinholes along top edge. Some corners are missing pieces of cardboard. Multiple creases extend inward along the right edge. There is a vertical crease at the center of the lower edge that moves upward and terminates just below the black cat. Minor staining around edges, with larger pattern of staining on reverse. Minor nicks and scuffs throughout. Any markings do not affect the visual appeal of the field image.
Medium
Single-sided lithographed paper.
