Description
A stoneware 1/4 gallon merchant jug with five lines of embossed text from what appears to be a very short-lived business of Bremner & Urqhart in Oshawa. In likely their first year of operation, Bremner and Urquhart took out a large advertisement in the Whitby Chronicle on April 10, 1865 that noted their location in the Gibbs Block in Oshawa where they offered groceries and a very wide assortment of wines and liquors, emphasizing "superior wines, brandies etc. for medicinal purposes". Their only directory appearance was in 1866 which revealed a misspelled "Brimmer & Urquhart - general store" in Oshawa. 1865-1866. Stamped, "Bremner & Urqhart / Grocers / Wine & Spirit / Merchants / Oshawa CW" (Urquhart is misspelled).
Condition
Very good condition, with a few tight/faint in-manufacture hairline cracks on the right side (middle), on the base and around the lower handle terminal. Thin 1/4" chip inside edge of spout, left side. Small chip at back top of spout. Heavily salt-glazed surface at the back.
