Description
Canadian. 1826 A rare copper wine measure with brass rims marked "Q.T. WINE" with a crown and U.C. (Upper Canada) while the other side is stamped "Home Dist U.C. 1826". Part of an official set of weights and measures that included five wine measures, five dry measures and various weights used by district inspectors to ensure that farmers and merchants were adhering to government standards. The Home District encompassed much of present-day central Ontario including Toronto. This piece was likely made by Levi Fairbanks in early 1826, a skilled coppersmith in Toronto. When the government Weights & Measures Acts were changed in later years, particularly during legislative changes (from Upper Canada to Canada West), these measures became redundant and were often scrapped. Stamped, "Home . Dist / U . C / 1826", at front and, "Q. T. Wine / U.C", at back. A crown is stamped above the "UC" at the back.
