Description
Oil on canvas painted by Chief James Beaver (1846-1925) of the Six Nations Reserve in Brantford, Ontario. Painted with precise detail, this is an excellent example of his work with the red trimmed white house having the yellow door ajar, the black picket fence along the boardwalk, and the white church to the side with outbuildings. Two arrow lightning rods atop the roof flank a single chimney which is also the only element where the artist has added a shadow. The trees along the road are painted in a style similar to Rufus Porter, a highly esteemed American folk artist in the 19th century. Beaver travelled extensively through southwestern Ontario creating works of art along the way. Signed lower right "Chief Beaver Oil Pinter" (sic), circa 1900. Marked, bottom right "Chief Beaver Oil Painter" note the misspelling of Chief.
Condition
Very good, strong colours.
