Description
An Ontario Schrank in original paint with the upper panels on the doors bearing the initials J and K within black circular garlands. The initials identify the maker John Klempp (1857-1914), Neustadt, who was a hotel proprietor and a cabinetmaker known for his inlaid furniture and smaller objects during the 1870-90 in Bruce County. In excellent untouched condition, beautifully crafted in pine with elegant proportions and supported by a Baroque inspired scalloped base with a centre drop and a carved shell-like cartouche. The case is painted in a rich red/brown faux-grained surface and the panels are in faux birdseye maple with a black border and black stencil decoration. The centre stile has two applied diamond panels and an oval panel also in the faux figured maple paint. The interior has two rows of wooden cloak hooks and the drawers are dovetailed. Original knobs, lock, escutcheon and key. Illustrated in "Canadian Folk Art to 1950" by John Fleming and Michael Rowan, page 93. Typical to the form, this Schrank is easily disassembled for transport and re-assembly. Circa 1880. Marked, upper panels of each door.
