Description
A large countertop advertising stoneware bottle for Gurd's ginger beer. Two different versions of these enormous advertising bottles are known to have been made: one like this example for the Montreal branch of Gurd's and the other for St. John, New Brunswick. These would have been displayed to entice patrons to purchase Gurd's ginger beer. The company was founded by Charles Gurd on May 1st, 1868 and operated continuously for several decades until 1943 when the firm was sold. Gurd's was easily Canada's most recognized brand of ginger beer with nearly two dozen variations of retail bottles, ranging in size from 11 to 12 ounces and in a variety of colour schemes. Bristol-glazed stoneware, 1920s. Transfer printed, "Gurd's Ginger Beer", Montreal, etc. within an oval crest at the front.
Condition
Excellent condition. Small area of in-manufacture smudging to the upper left portion of the transfer print. Also during manufacture, a very slight indentation with a 3/4" flaw at its centre on the right side just above the base edge.
