Description
A large and rare earthenware pitcher by John Brownscombe (1814-1881), profusely decorated with applied foliage motifs and having a bulbous body, scrolled handle and a pinched spout. John's wife Phyllis (1816-) worked alongside her husband and is credited with the application of abstract foliage and bird motifs on the various forms produced at the pottery. The Brownscombe family moved from England to Upper Canada in 1844 and by 1848 "The Coburg Star" reported some fine pottery exhibited by John Brownscombe of Port Hope (Welcome) in the annual Provincial Exhibition. Illustrated in "The Potter's Reach" by Moe Johnson, pgs 473 and 479, this is one of the largest examples known. Kinloss, Ontario, 1871-1881.
Condition
Very good condition with a 1/2 hole in the base and loss to the applied motif at the front centre. The rim exhibits normal wear and there is a 1" chip on the outside edge.
