Description
A lot of two pine side tables in original paint made for the Schultz family in the Wellesley area. The first has a drawer stenciled with the name "Veronica Schultz" (1844-1917) who was the second daughter of George and Magdelana (Erb) Schultz. The table is in birch and pine with the overlapping nailed drawer having the original brass knob, escutcheon and lock and also retaining a secret compartment at the back. The top has rounded corners and in very good condition. This table was found in Wellesley and was exhibited in the Country Heritage Loan Exhibition at Montgomery Mills in 1974; illustrated in "The Early Furniture of Ontario and the Atlantic Provinces" by Henry and Barbara Dobson, plate 10. Very good condition with minor edge loss to the drawer. The second table, also in original paint with the drawer being stenciled "Menno Schultz", is very similar in style and construction although it has a deeper skirt. Menno Schultz (1841-1920) was the third son and fourth child of George and Magdelana Schultz. This table is in birch and pine with an overlapping drawer that also retains a secret compartment but this time with a dovetailed drawer. Original brass knob, escutcheon and lock. Waterloo County, circa 1850.
