Description
A finely crafted home-made violin terminating with the sculpted head of a bearded man instead of the traditional scroll. Made by and also signed inside "W.J. Galbraith June 15, Collingwood", the head was carved in remembrance of Barney Morrison, uncle of the original owner. The violin retains its original red wash and the pegbox terminates with a carved bowtie under the man's chin and is further incised on the sides with a butterfly and a W. Illustrated in "Canadian Folk Art to 1950" by John Fleming and Michael Rowan pages 251 and 284. Circa 1900. Signed inside ""W.J. Galbraith June 15, Collingwood".
Condition
Very good condition with the original handmade case and brass hardware. Minor knicks to the edges and the bridge is loose.
Provenance
Illustrated in Canadian Folk Art to 1950, Fleming & Rowan. Page 250 & 251.
