Description
A five-gallon stoneware butter churn by James R. Burns, Toronto. Following a partnership with William Campbell (Burns & Campbell 1879-1881), James Burns became the sole-proprietor of the Don Bridge Pottery in Toronto until 1887. Burns was the last in a succession of potters to operate the business before it was dismantled and the land redeveloped for housing. This is a great example of a scarce form with a well-rendered cobalt flower. The wooden lid is old but not original. Toronto, Ontario, 1881-1887. Stamped, "James R. Burns. / Toronto. / 5".
Condition
Very good condition, dark surface. Two very faint/tight hairline cracks toward the right side near the lug handle, beginning at the rim and extending down 3.5" and 1.5", respectively. A third faint/tight 2" vertical in-manufacture crack at the base edge, right side. Slightly misshapen top (oval).
Provenance
From the late John Michael Durrant Collection.
