Description
A rare stoneware cemetery flower urn marked G.I. Lazier, Picton CW. George Irwin Lazier was the third person to manage the Picton pottery after William Hart and Samuel Skinner. During his tenure, Lazier marked all pieces "CW" (Canada West) even after Confederation in 1867. This is an incredibly rare form to be found marked by Lazier (until now, no others have been documented) and considering exposure to the elements, very few likely survived. Picton, Ontario, 1864-1879. Stamped, "G.I. Lazier Picton. C.W", just above the base edge at the front. There is a "2" stamped into the top edge of the rim followed by three single lines.
Condition
Good condition. Crack (unglued) that runs diagonally from the right side of the rim down to the base edge at the back. Tiny unseparated potstone and a thin 1/2" flake at the back just below the ornate perimeter. The black paint is likely post-manufacture.
