Description
A low Nantucket Lightship basket with the classic wooden bottom and having two carved handles. An original printed label on the bottom identifies the maker as O.C. Coffin on board the South Shoal Lightship. Nantucket's Coffin family were involved in all aspects of the local whaling industry from the 17th to the 19th century. Interestingly, an Owen Coffin was on the ill-fated "Essex" that departed Nantucket in August 1819 never to return. The basket is in good condition with minor loss to the rim wrapping. 19th century. Label on base: Manufactured by O.C. Coffin on board of South Shoal Lightship.

Excellent original condition with one minor rim break.
