Description
A stoneware one-gallon decorated merchant jug made for Templeton & Brown, Belleville. William Templeton, a tailor by trade, and James Brown, a grocer, teamed up in the early 1860s to establish their grocery, wine/spirit and clothing business on Front Street in Belleville. The pair continued together until around 1869 when they went their separate ways to run stores of their own. 1860s. Stamped, "Templeton & Brown. / Wine & Spirit Merchant. / Belleville." Capacity mark "1" in cobalt script.
Condition
Overall very good condition with well-executed cobalt bow tie decoration. Light staining at the front and left side. 1.5" kiln furniture touch just below the decoration. Small nicks front edge and left side of spout, and bottom edge of handle.
