Description
A decorated one-gallon stoneware merchant jug made for A. Foster, Kingston. Abraham Foster first appeared in an 1851 directory, listed as a wholesale and retail grocer at 23 Princess Street in Kingston. By 1857 he had moved to 30 Princess Street and was noted as a grocer and spirit merchant, remaining in business there until 1868. Picton, 1850s-1860s. Stamped, "A. Foster / Princess Street / Kingston / 1".
Condition
Very good condition. There are some in-manufacture flaws, mainly from kiln furniture (top edge of the spout, base edge at the front, base edge at the back, at the midpoint of the handle, and a 1/4" spot toward the right side). Heavy turkey droppings along the back. Somewhat blurred decoration.
