ARTIST
Stephen Outhouse (1943-2018) was a sculptor and woodcarver based in Brighton, Digby, Nova Scotia. Outhouse took up carving while stationed in Germany with the Canadian army in the early 1960s. After leaving the army, he worked as a carpenter, labourer and a mall superintendent. His early work was primarily devoted to relief carvings of local subjects and life size people. Later, his work turned to colourful birds and black and white fish – every species that can be found in Maritime waters. His work is included in many private and public collections.

St. John's, Newfoundland / Labrador. Mid 1990s. Stephen Outhouse's (1943 - 2018) legacy as a folk artist is highlighted by his meticulous wood working skills. Well known for his painted relief carvings of Atlantic Canada scenes, his wood carvings of animals are also extremely well executed. This life-sized Dalmatian dog, howling enthusiastically, illustrates Mr. Outhouse' skill as a folk artist. Finely carved and nicely painted, it is an excellent example of the artists' work. Signed, "Stephen Outhouse" on underside with the number 3399 below the signature.
