Description
Canadian. 1890s. Show globes are thought to have originated as a symbol of a chemist's shop. Since chemist's were preparing and selling chemical concoctions for medicinal purposes, apothecaries, who were using chemical remedies, eventually adopted the show globe as a way to attract attention illuminating various colored chemicals when light passed through. There were also beliefs that different colors suggested different signals- if the globe was filled with red liquid, there was a plague in town; if it was filled with green, all was well. This show globe came out of the Chapman Pharmacy on Dundas Street in London, Ontario. Marked, "Pat'D. June 16, 1891", on inner ceiling mount. All items are guaranteed authentic by Miller & Miller Auctions. All purchases are eligible for paid delivery to the Spring Dixie Gas & Oil Show on April 10-12 2025.
