Description
British. Early 20th Century. In the early 20th century, national pride was often attached to the pursuit of records of endurance or speed whether achieved by humans or machines. One of the most hotly-contested records was that of the land speed record. These two mounted and framed postcards celebrate the achievements of Henry Segrave, a notable British pioneer in land speed and water speed records, and a man determined to wrest such records from the Americans. At the bottom is the "Sunbeam 1000HP Mystery" otherwise known as "The Slug". With Segrave at the helm, this was the first vehicle to achieve a land speed of over 200 mph in 1927. At the top is the "Golden Arrow", which achieved a speed record of over 231 mph in 1929 and gave Segrave the notable distinction of holding both the land and water speed records simultaneously! Sadly, the water attempt, though successful, would result in Segrave's death, bringing an end to the career of one of the early 20th century's greatest speed pioneers. Photocopy of the reverse side of one postcard is included.
