Description
Canadian. C. 1891. When Canada began expansion toward the West, it required trained farmers to tend the land and make settlement possible. A clever plan was hatched following closely to the US system of promising free land to those willing to make the journey. To make things even easier, the Canadian government also agreed to transport those farmers at no cost and even supply train cargo space to move household goods and even farm equipment! Devastating droughts in South Dakota provided Canadian officials with a golden opportunity to tempt American farmers in that State - at least those brave enough to accept. It proved to be a great way for Canada to attract trained farmers from a nearby source, and this poster's purpose was to show just how easy the whole process could be. Most of those pictured in this poster ended up settling in Yorkton, Manitoba. Note the 4-4-0 "American" locomotive pulling this rolling advertisement along! An interesting and unusual piece of Canadian history.
