Description
Canadian. 1905. The Victorian Era was a time of progress and innovation. New machines and techniques allowed production at a scale never before seen. Victorians saw themselves as modern, scientific individuals, capable of completing tremendous feats of engineering and industry. It is no surprise then, that this era saw the rise of World's Fairs and exhibitions- a chance to show off technological advances and exhibits. The Eastern Exhibition shown here was no exception. This event showed off advances in machinery and tools along with cultural, agricultural, and recreational events. This poster captures the optimistic tone of pre-Great War Canada - featuring a cheerful and elegant scene with a view of the agricultural fair in the background. An observer of history may also note the striking background colour which appears to be an homage to "Scheele's Green" - the most fashionable colour of the mid-19th century. A gorgeous and rare piece of Canadian Belle Époque history. Marked, "Dungan Lith Co. Hamilton, Ont", in lower margin.
