Description
Brantford, Ontario. 1860s. Franklin Goold and Charles Waterous were businessmen who owned the Brantford Pottery together from 1859 to 1867. During their tenure, some of the best Ontario stoneware ever made came from this business and those pieces reside in the top museum and private collections in Canada and beyond. This is an exceedingly rare and exceptional reverse-stenciled horse adorning this diminutive two-gallon crock. Acquired in 1978. Ex. Don Hoffman Collection (Paris, Ontario, collector and dealer). Stamped, "F.P. Goold / Rantford / 2" (the "B" in Brantford is missing).
Condition
Good condition with scattered patches of spalling at the front lower half, and at the rear base edge. Two very fine hairline cracks at rear, 5" and 1.75". Two thin interior rim chips, 1.25" and 0.25". Small and faint X-shaped crack (0.75") on the left side, middle. The horizontal line just above the base edge at the front is an in-manufacture scribe line, not a crack.
Medium
Salt-glazed stoneware.
Provenance
From the Estate of Roy and Marilyn Quance.
