Description
Brantford, Ontario. 1860s. Franklin Goold and Charles Waterous were businessmen who owned the Brantford Pottery together from 1859 to 1867. Goold birds are rare and this is a fine example and beautifully rendered with great detail in the layering of its feathers and spots on its head and neck. Even the stump that the bird is perched on has a strong cobalt colour. The artist probably applied thicker layers of cobalt oxide to help make the decoration stand out after the initial bisque-firing resulted in a darker toned surface. Stamped, "F.P. Goold / Brantford / 2".
Condition
Dark toned surface likely due to overfiring in the kiln, plus some leaching of contents (there is a faint odour from the interior). Tight 1" in-manufacture crack at lower terminal of handle. Small 1/2" chip base edge right side and very thin 1/4" flake off the front edge of the spout.
Medium
Salt-glazed stoneware.
Provenance
From the Estate of Roy and Marilyn Quance.
