Description
Port Lorne, Nova Scotia. C. 1990. Attributed to Harvey Caldwell. Life-sized carved and painted Oryx head mounted to shield shaped plywood back. Realistically painted in tan, white and black. The antler is spirally carved. Retaining an old or original brown finish. Harvey Caldwell was a well known wood carver in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia. Originally commissioned by Reg Havil. He was first collected by Chris Huntington who donated a work by Mr. Caldwell to the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in 1994. Harvey Caldwell died in 2007.
Condition
Very good overall condition. Minor shrinkage cracks and paint loss. Small loss to tip of one ear.
