ARTIST
Magella Normand (1921-2001) was a sculptor and woodcarver from Cap-aux-Os, Gaspe, Quebec. Born in December 1921, he led a diverse life, working as a lumberjack, fisherman, sailor, and foreman. Upon his retirement, he built a small workshop behind his house to pursue his passion for sculpture. Inspired by the natural beauty of the Gulf of St. Lawrence in the Bay of Gaspe, he created vibrant and expressive sculptures, including multicoloured peacocks and iconic porcupines adorned with meticulously placed matchsticks. Normand's work was characterized by its skillful round-bosse technique, marked by simplicity.

Description
Cap-aux-Os, Gaspe, Quebec. C. 1990. The peacock was one of Magella Normand's signature pieces (the other was the porcupine). The peacock shows dramatic and multi-coloured plumage, with the tail pieces created with bright coloured pieces of wood attached with multiple wires to the body of the bird. While unsigned, the piece is easily recognized as the work of Magella Normand.
