Description
Canadian. 1950s. This sign was designed to hang in a delicatessen. The beautiful cursive script describing the words “we feature” is decidedly understated, the focal point of the sign being of course the deli products themselves. The product however was never strictly Kosher, and the Company, currently in business, is now identified as being merely “Chicago 58”. At the time this sign was created, the controversy within the Jewish Community concerning the question of “what actually constitutes a Kosher product” loomed large (and still does). Perhaps this is why Mr. Appleby, with his quirky sense of humour, has depicted the brisket of corned beef as looking suspiciously similar to a side of bacon, and the large slices of salami as resembling thick slices of ham.
Signed, "N. Appleby Signs", lower centre.
