Description
Canadian. 1950s. The mascot in this “GOODMAN’S” sign appears to be a whimsical portrayal of Appleby’s younger brother Morris. Morris was tall and thin with blue eyes, blond stringy hair, and a high level of intelligence. In Yiddish, a tall, skinny individual is known as a “loksh” or a "noodle". Morris was an accountant, a lawyer, and by any measure, an “egghead”. After obtaining certification as a Chartered Accountant he secretly earned a Law degree by attending night classes at Osgoode Hall. He only told his older brother after the fact. Other factors make this sign interesting. First, the words “good” appear in three places: as part of the words “Goodman” and “Goodness”, but less obviously, when the “G” on the chef’s hat is combined with the “O’s” in the eyes, and the “D” in the egg’s mouth. Also, Appleby's device of the ribbon or banner is evident in the drawstrings of the noodle’s apron. The noodle’s chef’s hat is actually an inverted egg cup. Mr. Appleby has chosen to depict the lettering of the word “Pure” in such a way that it is suggestive of the yolk of an egg; a yolk, which if viewed in profile, seems to be sitting atop the rest of the “white” of the same egg, as delineated by the words “Noodles” “Soups” “Matzos”. Signed, "N. Appleby Signs", bottom center edge.
