Description
Marshalltown, Nova Scotia. 1964-1965. Here is one of Maud's favourite and iconic winter scenes depicting a single passenger in a two-horse sleigh headed for the village, or perhaps headed home. Maud painted these scenes by memory but took liberties such as white snow in the valley, with green grass on the hills. The colours she used often depended on her paint supplies. Sometimes she would paint by candlelight which gave way to vivid colours in the morning light, such as those seen in this serial image. The work is signed, "M. Lewis", lower right. This is the rarest of the Maud Lewis signatures.
