Charlie Poirier, an artist hailing from Cheticamp, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, made a mark as a sculptor and woodcarver during the late 20th century. Poirier's artistic repertoire primarily comprises bird and occasional human figurine carvings, often depicting the vibrant lives of Cape Breton islanders. His bird carvings are particularly noteworthy, featuring what he charmingly dubs 'flows.' In these creations, he artfully arranges birds of matching colours on 'as found' driftwood branches, imbuing them with grace, movement, energy, and humor. Working with pine as his primary medium, Charlie Poirier infuses each piece with bright primary colours. His work celebrates the spirit of Cape Breton island life.

Description
Nova Scotia. Late 20th century. Charlie Poirier from Cheticamp, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, carved six common Gulls in pine mounted on a natural branch and painted in their natural colours. His bird carvings include what he calls ‘flows’; where he will mount a number of birds of the same colours perched on ‘as found’ driftwood branches in ways that are extremely graceful and full of movement, energy, and humour. He says that these are his favourite things to create, but he is known to occasionally carve people. Signed, bottom of base.
