Born in Saint-Paul-de-la-Croix, Québec, sculptor Aimé Desmeules (1917-1997) specialized in animal carvings of all kinds: wild, domestic and exotic. Aimé did not start carving until age 64, when his father, famous sculptor George Desmeules, passed down the skill. George taught Aimé how to create exact replicas of the various animals in his artistic repertoire, which Aimé gladfully reconstructed. It wasn't until his father's passing in 1986 when Aimé began to create his own original sculptures. Aimé marked the underside of his creations with 'A. D.', in an intentionally hard-to-discern script making it difficult to differentiate the 'A' (Aimé) from a 'G' (George).

Description

Quebec. C. 1980. A classicly carved mother pig attributed to Aime Desmeules of Saint-Paul-de-la-Croix, Quebec. The floppy-eared sow is painted in pale pink with a rose-coloured snout, eyes, and teats. Desmeules was a sculptor of animals of every kind - wild, domestic, and exotic. He was the son of George Desmeules who was also an artist. He worked together with his father as he learned the craft. It was only later in his life that he began to sign his work on the underside, usually with the initials “A. D.”
