Description
Canadian. Belleville, Ontario. 1880s. Salt-Glazed Stoneware. The partnership of Hart Bros. & Lazier was formed in late 1879 by Alcena Lazier (wife of George Lazier of the Picton pottery) and her brothers, Charles and Elwin Hart. To meet increased demands for their stoneware products, the business had to be expanded beyond the Picton pottery. To this end, a second pottery, The Bay of Quinte Works, was leased in Belleville and is where this attractive example was made. Although not unheard of, decorated stoneware with personal inscriptions are seldom seen. This crock features the name "Mary" above a swirled decoration in cobalt blue beneath the potter's mark. Another example, bearing the inscription "Martha Dear" and made by George Lazier, can be seen in the book "Early Ontario Potters" (David Newlands) on page 41. Stamped, "Hart Bros. & Lazier / Bay Of Quinte Works / 4".
Condition
Two chips roughly ¾" in size can be seen along the inner edge of the rim.
Provenance
Ex. Carl Fox Collection.
