ARTIST
Art Gallant (died 1980) was a naive sculptor and woodcarver based in Dieppe, New Brunswick. He created works with social and sometimes political observations, using animals and people as his subjects. Gallant often told a story with his carvings, and would put it into words on the sculpture. His works were occasionally coloured, and always heavily varnished and signed. He primarily worked with cedar and pine, and occasionally with ‘as found’ materials. Gallant's work is widely collected and has become rare.

Description
Dieppe, New Brunswick. c1970. Pine. Painted on the top of the base, noted Dieppe, New Brunswick sculptor Arthur Gallant suggests this is the "Official Emblem for N.B.". The hair, mane, tail and fetlocks have been deeply carved and accented in brown paint. Green wool felt applied to the underside of the base. Marked, "Designed and Carved by Art Gallant, Dieppe, NB" and "The Official Emblem For N.B." on the top of the base and stamped "Hand Carved by Art Gallant, Dieppe, N.B. Canada" on the edge of the base.
