Description
Two (2). Canadian. Late 19th century. Earthenware. Attributed to Handley Bros., Picton, Ont. W.J. and H. Handley purchased property in Picton, Ontario in 1891 for the purpose of an earthenware pottery enterprise. The business continued operations until 1899. The Handley pottery produced both glazed and unglazed wares. (see Early Ontario Potters (David Newlands), plate 5.14).
Condition
One has a ½" loss on the reverse side to the edge of the raised (applied) coat. There is also a faint hairline beneath the glaze behind the shoulder/foreleg. The other example has a repair to the left foreleg and a hairline that runs beneath the right foreleg, terminating at the foot. Also present on the reverse base is a crack with glaze loss that extends from across the base terminating at the tail.
