Description
Canadian. Ca: 1960. Watercolour on cardstock. Winter Sleigh Ride with Covered Bridge by Maud Lewis. Once again Lewis has managed to highlight one of the popular and favoured subjects of the sleigh heading for the covered bridge in a joyous winter ride. Surprisingly well, she has highlighted the tree with balls of snow; a very effective motif in a small format. Maud received these blank cards from Edith Wallis, the editor of the Digby Courier. The facing part of the card has an opening that acts as a frame. Card measures 4.5 x 6.5". Image: 3.25 x 5.25". This lot and the lot preceding were purchased directly from the artist by a relative of the current owner. $6000/9000. Maud Lewis (1901–1970) has become one of Canada’s most renowned artists, the subject of numerous monographs, novels, plays, documentaries, and even a feature film. She was born into relative comfort and obscurity, and died in poverty, though enjoying national fame. She overcame severe physical challenges to create a unique artistic style, and sparked a boom in folk art in her home province. Though she rarely left her tiny house, her works have travelled around the world, and in the decades since her death she has become an iconic figure, a symbol of Nova Scotia, and a beloved character in the popular imagination. Specialist Remarks: “I like the two cards very much. Maud received these blank cards from Edith Wallis, the editor of the Digby Courier. The facing part of the card has an opening acting as a frame. The cards were done in watercolour or gouache. Maud would have sold cards for 5 cents each".
