Description
Canadian. Ca: 1960. Watercolour on cardstock. Winter Sleigh Ride Between Trees by Maud Lewis. In a much smaller dimension Lewis has managed to convey all the happy elements she much loved. In this case the sleigh is orange and the engaged child standing at the front is highlighted in a purple coat. The sky is a wonderful and very happy blue accentuated by an even layer of white snow. Maud received these blank cards from Edith Wallis, the editor of the Digby Courier. The facing part of the card has an opening that acts as a frame. Card measures 4.5 x 6.5". Image measures 3.25 x 5.25". This lot and the next lot were purchased directly from the artist by a relative of the current owner. $6000/9000. Maud Lewis (1901–1970) has become one of Canada’s most renowned artists, the subject of numerous monographs, novels, plays, documentaries, and even a feature film. She was born into relative comfort and obscurity, and died in poverty, though enjoying national fame. She overcame severe physical challenges to create a unique artistic style, and sparked a boom in folk art in her home province. Though she rarely left her tiny house, her works have travelled around the world, and in the decades since her death she has become an iconic figure, a symbol of Nova Scotia, and a beloved character in the popular imagination. Specialist remarks: “I like the two cards very much. The cards were done in watercolour or gouache. Maud would have sold cards for 5 cents each".
