Description
A small redware tray with brown spatter and a scalloped edge. The raised and embossed rim of this dish frames a centre panel with the figure of "Diana the Huntress" carrying a bow and with a greyhound at her feet. The tray is being attributed to the J. T. Bailey pottery, Bowmanville, as it was found very close to the pottery site on Scugog Road near Highway 2, however, a similar dish in the Canadian Museum of History (ex John Harbinson collection) is marked “Garnet & Davis”. John Davis immigrated to Canada in 1840 and, five years later, started a pottery on Yonge Street north of Toronto that prospered well into the 1920s. The community that grew around the pottery was named Davisville in his honour. One pock mark on surface and some minor edge flakes on the reverse. Unmarked, Ontario, late 19th century. 8.25" x 6.5" x 1". CODE-POT
