Description
Canadian. Wood, metal and canvas foghorn. Probably second quarter, 20th century. The wooden body with metal plate impressed, ”Manufactured by Powers Bros. Lunenburg, N.S.” Painted black. The side with painted inscription “H.M.S. Titanic Emergency Fog Horn”. Powers Brothers was established by Frank Powers in 1874, at Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. The company closed in 1985. The use of onshore signals to assist sailors travelling near the coastline in dense fog took place when the fog was thick enough to obscure the light produced by the lighthouse optic. 17 x 24 x 11".
